Devon Energy jumps on $6 billion Eagle Ford shale acquisition
Shares of Devon Energy Corp. were among the largest energy gainers in the S&P 500 Index on Wednesday, following the independent oil and gas firm’s announcement that it is buying GeoSouthern Energy’s assets in Texas’s Eagle Ford shale formation. Devon DVN -1.11% will pay privately held GeoSouthern $6 billion in cash. The assets include production of 53,00 barrels of oil equivalent a day and 82,000 net acres with at least 1,200 undrilled locations, the company said.

Shire Buys ViroPharma for $4.2 Billion to Add Orphan Drug
Shire Plc (SHP) agreed to buy ViroPharma Inc. (VPHM) for about $4.2 billion to gain treatments for rare diseases and ease dependence on its best-selling Vyvanse pill for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The acquisition gives Shire access to Cinryze, a medicine for the inflammatory condition hereditary angioedema, which complements Shire’s Firazyr for the same malady, the company said. The purchase marks the company’s third this year under Flemming Ornskov, who became chief executive officer in April, and is Shire’s biggest, topping the $3.6 billion takeover of Canada’s BioChem Pharma Inc. in 2001.News
